Which religion do people believe in Thailand?



In Thailand, 95% of population is Buddhist. Buddhism is an official religion of Thailand that dates back to the 3rd century BC. from India. People in Thailand are very religious, but they also have a lot of respect for the religious beliefs of others and are very open.


Emperor Asoka of the Mauryan Empire sent groups of monks to different parts of the world, including Southeast Asia, to spread Theravada Buddhism. In this way Buddhism was introduced to Thailand in the third century BC. Thailand is the only country in the world with the original form of this philosophy of life.

Meditation is an important part of Buddhism. It is a tool for self-reflection and for identifying and solving the causes of individual wishes or problems.

Thailand has more than 150,000 Buddhist monks and around 20,000 Buddhist temples. Some temples, especially in Chiang Mai, give visitors the opportunity to talk to monks to gain general knowledge about Buddhism or to study Buddhism seriously.


Islam is the second largest religion in Thailand. It is practiced by only about 4% of the population, the majority of Thai Muslims live in the southernmost provinces near the Malaysian border.

Other religions in Thailand are Hinduism, Confucianism, Taoism and Christianity, which is mostly practiced by people in Bangkok, where multi-cultural citizens of Indian, Chinese, Japanese and European descent live.
