How do I get a Greek health insurance?

In general, expats and their families have access to free or cheap public healthcare.

IKA is a public insurance company that oversees Greek social security.

Medical care by IKA-accredited doctors is generally free, although patients have to pay a fee for prescription drugs. Other benefits include free laboratory services, maternity care, medical equipment or aids and emergency transportation.

Other citizens of the European Union can also make use of free health care benefits on condition that they have a European health card, which entitles the holder to public health cover for a limited period of time. Pensioners from EU countries who receive a pension from their home country and who plan to settle in Greece are also entitled to health benefits.
