What can I expect from Greek cuisine?
The Greek cuisine is very tasteful and diverse. It is a typical Mediterranean cuisine with influences from the Middle East and surrounding countries. Popular ingredients are olive oil, auberges, tomatoes, courgettis, bread, herbs (oregano, parsley, mint, thyme ...), various types of meat including lamb and pork, olives, cheese and yogurt. Many Greek desserts are characterized by filo pastry, honey and nuts.
A basis of ancient ingredients that can be traced back to ancient Greece - bread, olives and wine - is supplemented with local seasonal treasures such as fruit, nuts, legumes and herbs.
The Greeks make countless types of goat, sheep and cow's milk from their milk; just about every island has its own kind.
Greece also has a few popular drinks. Just think of ouzo, an aniseed aperitif that you can drink both pure and with cold water. Or retsina, a red or white wine with a typical resin taste. Greeks are also lovers of iced coffee or 'café frappé'.
