About 12 million people around the world speak Greek. They mainly live in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Albania, Turkey and the United States.
Most people speak a few words of English, especially in the tourist areas. Yet the Greeks appreciate it when tourists try to speak their language.
Greek grammar also has its difficulties, especially the verbs are difficult, but the principles of how the language works are nevertheless quite easy to understand.
Greek is also one of the oldest Indo-European languages in the world that has survived more than 34 centuries, and is the official language alongside Turkish in Cyprus. Today more than 15-25 million people speak Greek and in Greece 99.5% of the population speaks the language.
Deciphering the Mycenaean script (found on clay tablets in settlements from the Mycenaean period) proved that Greek was spoken from the 15th century BC.
