Why do I need a tax number in Greece?
All residents and foreign non-residents with financial affairs in Greece must have a Tax Number (Arithmo Forologiko). An AFM is unique for every individual and acts as a means of identification for the Greek authorities.
Without an AFM you will not be able to buy a property, a car, a boat, or to import a car registered abroad or obtain any form of tax certificate from the authorities.
Your AFM must be used in all dealings with the Greek tax authorities (for example, when you file an annual tax return), when you pay property tax and in various other transactions.
Greek tax number is required for items such as:
- Open a Greek bank account
- Registration of energy bills
- Payment of Greek land / municipal taxes
- Applying for a Greek driver's license
- Payment of residence permit
